Schedule Of Canoe Sprint Events

Also known as flat-water kayaking, Canoe sprint is a popular water sport. As in case of canoe slalom, this sport too is featured in Olympic Games and is governed by the International Canoe Federation (ICF). In Olympics 2012, Canoe sprint is scheduled to be held between 6 August 2012 and 11 August 2012 at Eton Dorney, Buckinghamshire. The biggest international rivals taking part in this sport in 2012 Olympics are Hungary, Germany, and China. Though it has a relatively low profile among other water sports in Olympic Games, canoeing is one of the lucrative Olympic pursuits with 12 gold medals waiting for winners. First featured in the Olympic Games in 1924 as a demonstration event, Canoe sprint became a full medal sport at Berlin Olympics in 1936. Quota of Athletes
248 athletes are participating 12 medal events in London Olympics 2012.

Matches
Canoe Sprint events are conducted in still water and athletes participate in races over distances of 200 m, 500 m, or 1000 m, either solo or in teams of two or four. Participants seat in kneeling position in canoes, which are steered using corrective strokes with paddle. The course is unobstructed and the competitors have to overcome that in the minimum time.

Scoring
The participant who covers the given course in the shortest time period wins the match.

Rules
Only the members of those clubs or associations, which are affiliated with an ICF National Federation, are allowed to take part in an international competition. By rule, at least three canoes should be entered before the race. If number of entries in races is high, then heats become necessary and the number of canoes in each heat should be nine or less than nine. Maximum number of canoes permitted in final is six. All Canoes should have a vertical plate (18 x 20cm) indicating the lane and each plate should display the line numbers written in black opposite to a white background. The plate should be made of transparent material. These vertical plates should be placed on the centerline on the afterdeck.
