The Mall - An Iconic Location In Central London
The Mall is an iconic location in central London. It is nearly a million-square-foot retail center, equivalent in size to twenty-five football pitches with three hundred shops, seventy restaurants, a fourteen-screen cinema, three hotels, bowling alley and the United Kingdom's largest casino. It was created as a ceremonial route in the early twentieth century, matching the creation of similar ceremonial routes in other cities of developing countries. The Mall is a road that runs from Buckingham Palaces, western end to Admiralty Arch and from Trafalgar Square to its eastern end. The distance between the railings at Palace to the Admiralty Arch is approximately one kilometer. The surface of The Mall is colored red, which gives the effect of a giant red carpet leading up to Buckingham Palace. The Mall is famous for formal ceremonies and major sporting events, such as the London Marathon. This year, 2012, The Mall will play host to Athletics (Marathon and Race Walk), Paralympic Athletics (Marathon), and Road Cycling (Road Race). Provisional Scoreboards, video boards, seating, tents cabins and generators will be constructed alongside The Mall. The Olympic and the Paralympic Marathons are significantly smaller than the London Marathon and other mass participation events, with nearly eighty athletes taking part in each race.
During The Games
During Olympics, The Mall will be equipped with provisional seating, scoreboards, video boards, tents, cabins, generators, etc. The men's cycling road race, which will be held on Saturday 28 July one day prior to women's race. These two events will begin at The Mall. Before the riders head south-west through the city and across Putney Bridge, they will make their way through Richmond Park and past Hampton Court Palace heading Surrey, which has challenging loop around Box Hill. And at last the riders will head back to The Mall for dramatic finish in the shadow of the Queen's official residence. The next game held at The Mall will be the five road events on the Athletics program - the men's and women's marathons that will take place on the streets of Central London before ending on The Mall. Then, after a month later, The Mall will host the finale of both the men's and women's Paralympic marathons. All these games can be watched freely, but spectators can buy tickets for some viewing areas.
After The Game
Following the Paralympic Games, all the temporary structures will be taken down and The Mall will go back to its usual business.
