Field Hockey
The history of Hockey in Olympics has so been dominated by Indian Men's Hockey team that it is impossible to start this any other way. 6 consecutive times-from 1928 to 1956-the Indian Men's Hockey team has won the gold, rendering all other gold-less for almost a decade and a half. So remarkable was their feat that the team was unbeaten for 30 consecutive matches and scored 197 goals, while conceding only 8. Out of the 29 gold medals awarded till now, no wonder India leads the table with 8; whereas holding 11 medals out of 88. Other teams that too have fared well in the sport at Olympics are Netherlands (4 gold; 14 out of total 88 medals), Australia (4 gold; 11 out of total 88 medals), Pakistan, Great Britain and Germany. Germany was the winner in 2012 London Games. In the 2016 Rio Games, it will be interesting to see whether India can reclaim its lost glory. The competition will be held at Olympic Hockey Center from 7th to 20th August. 192 men and 192 women, constituting 12 teams in each category will participate in the competition.
