Shanghai like most of the cities across the
globe, experiences typical four distinct seasons. The international
centre of finance and commerce enjoys humid subtropical climate.
With the Beijing Olympics fast approaching, it would be advantageous
to know about the weather conditions the city will be enjoying while
co-hosting the Games in August this year. Shanghai is located on the
Yangtze River delta on China's east coast and is approximately
equidistant between Beijing and Hong Kong. Being a coastal city, the
weather of the region is immensely affected by the Yangtze River
Delta.
Shanghai experiences extreme climatic conditions. On one hand it
will have extremely hot and humid summers and on the other hand
freezing winters, with temperatures dropping to 0oC. The
city enjoys abundant sunshine and at the same time abundant rain
fall too. Compared to summers and winters, spring and autumn are
shorter in duration. The summer months as mentioned are hot and
humid, with temperatures rising to 33oC. The summer
season lasts from May to September, with July and August being the
hottest and most humid months of the year. The high humidity levels
make one's stay outside a little uncomfortable. Light cotton clothes
with hats and umbrellas to prevent direct scorching sun are the best
bet in the summer months.
Winters in Shanghai are extremely chilly and cold. Winters sets in
October and lasts till mid March. December, January and February
happen to be the coldest months of the year with temperatures going
down to 0oC and sometimes even below it. The city does
not receive much snowfall but owing to cold northerly winds from
Siberia, Shanghai can receive one or two days of snowfall per year.
The best seasons to visit Shanghai are the spring and autumn
seasons. The spring months last from April to mid-May and the autumn
season extends from September to mid-November. The weather in these
two seasons is relatively pleasant with humidity levels being not
